Depth- Deep and Shallow

Introduction

This week, we’re focusing on capturing depth in our photos. For these photos, I decided to take advantage of the fall season and I went to the BYU-I gardens and the apple orchard.

For this photo, I wanted to get a landscape photo of the beautiful rows of apple trees. It was tricky to try to get everything in focus (like that pesky leaf on the bottom right corner), so that’s something I’ll have to continue to practice. Overall though, I’m proud of how this photo turned out. I love the fall colors of the dying leaves and the ones that are still green.

This photo was taken in the gardens rather than the orchards- and when I saw this beautiful red tree, I knew I just had to get a picture of it somehow. For this one, I left the evergreen branch in the frame to get a feel for the depth of the photo and to compare how tall the tree really was.

Shallow:

I’m not sure if an apple a day really does keep the doctor away, but I knew couldn’t stay away from this shot (yes, you have permission to cringe at that pun). For this one I tried to capture just the apple and its surrounding leaves, with the rest of the tree in the background with a lot of bokeh. I used a low aperture to get only the apple in focus.

Are you noticing a pattern here? This shoot was a lot of nature- though for this image, I decided to leave the apple trees behind and look for something else. I used a low aperture again to capture the face of the rose in focus and blur out the background. Flowers are one of my favorite things to capture in shallow depth because you can see every detail of its design.
